Root Cellar-Flint Hills

Native limestone arched-roof root cellars dot the Flint Hills landscape, and were used as safe havens for early prairie settlers before any other structures were built. Today, these man-made caves may be all that remain of a homestead. Chiseled of native stone harvested from nearby quarries protruding from surrounding pastures, these spaces exude the spirit of self reliance and strength of the people on the frontier.
