There exists a diary of a Jesuit Priest that describes his travels up the Missouri River to the area of the Femme Osage and Tavern Creek where axe men harvested cedar logs to raft down the river to St Louis in mid-1760???s. Arriving at the Mississippi wharf of the new town, French residents purchased the timbers to build their vertical cedar-log cabins.
