Inspired by the journal of 1823 frontier traveler, the Duke of Wuerttemberg on his trip up the Missouri River he writes: ???Very early on the morning of June 11, we encountered a plague of the most peculiar kind. Entire billions of butterflies belonging to the family of nymphalidae (Monarch) covered the vessel and all objects, hindering almost every activity in that they ceaselessly darkened our eyes and hands, even clinging fast to our nostrils and flying into our mouths whilest we spoke or breathed…???
