Osage On Charbonier Bluff

Set on the high ground above the Missouri River, later known as Charbonier Bluff, the view extends to the Mississippi River bluffs to the northeast. The Osage believed in mourning the dead. The mourning prayers, in which the entire tribe participated, were done in such a howling manner that European visitors to the Osages never failed to write about the scene. The tribe believed that the dead required vengeance to reach the land of the spirits.
